If you print a lot of photos — and the real estate on your desktop is at a premium — Epson’s Expression Photo XP-850 is a handy “Small-in-One” printer. The US$299.99 devices quickly serves up excellent photos within a space-saving design (17.2 x 23.5 x 8.1 inches and a weight of 19.2 pounds).
Families who take lots of photos, as well as photo enthusiasts, will love it. The crisp, sharp photos offer vibrant colors thanks to the easily installed Claria Photo HD six-color inks. The results are lifelike skin tones and smooth gradations.
The Epson Small-in-One — which works with Mac OS X10.5.8 and higher — can print out 4-x-6 photos as fast as 10 seconds (of course, your results may vary slightly depending on how much detail is in the image). The XP-850 sports a dedicated photo tray, direct CD/DVD printing, and a rear paper feed for card stock, envelopes and more.
It also boasts a variety of productivity features, such as automatic two-sided printing, copying and scanning, a 3.5-inch LCD with gesture navigation, 4800 dpi scanning/copying, and a 30-page Automatic Document Feeder with color fax (does anyone really fax anymore?). The auto-extend output paper tray keeps your documents from spilling onto the floor.
If you don’t do a lot of color printing, a less expensive option than the Expression Photo XP-850 might suit you better. But if you print many photos, photo books, greeting cards, etc., this all-in-one will give you amazing output — and quickly.
