iLuv’s US$39.99 Epicarp is a serviceable slim folio cover for the iPad mini that comes across as a bit flimsy considering the price.
Available in black, green, pink and grey, the case does have some features to recommend. The lid is segmented like Apple’s Smart Cover, but has three columns instead of four. The cover can fold all the way back when you’re reading your emails, checking the weather or playing your favorite games. You can position it to serve as a stand for watching videos and movies. Or you can bend it into a triangular position for typing.
The Epicarp boasts a softshell front cover, hardshell back and, as iLuv describes it, an “ultra-thin construction that protects your iPad mini without adding bulk or weight.” It is ultra-thin and ultra-light, but its plastic composition doesn’t feel substantial enough to offer serious protection.
The Epicarp isn’t a terrible product. But it’s not a great one either. Your money can better spent elsewhere.
